DFI Week 9 Revision

Week 9 Dorathy discussed the huge power that Ubiquitous teaching and learning can have. When there is no longer the constraints of learning only occuring within the four walls of a classroom a finishing bell. It can actually extend much futher with access and availability beyond school hours. It can reach into the home, it can streatch out to seek other experts in other places, spaces time zones or countries. It certainly yeileds a different type of power.
If you are away, you are traveling, if covid 19 hits and your in lock down- well you don't have to miss out because its right there and accessible for you. Its even rewindable so if you don't get it the first time or want to go back over something - easy peasy thats' rewindable Ubiquitous teaching and learning. Following this chat and after a few hairy minutes waiting to reshedual and get on to the Exam... Well what can I say it is done! It was a really full on day and on this occasion I had my 14 year old son Around - someone mentioned it being a good thing to do this exam and put our selves in the shoes of our young learners. This was gold my year 10 boy witnessing Mum about to do an exam, was she comfortably? No in fact it had been over 20 years since she sat a 3 hour exam.. Was she jumping for joy to be doing this? No she was a bit unsure about some aspects and was very concerned about the time pressure. On top of all this as life often does it had thrown in some unexpected excitement and change so the leadup to this day had been unavoidably manic in the entire Newlands household to say the least. Despite all this I (Mum) was brave and sat down and got stuck in. Well how did it go? I ran short of time - this was something that I was concerned about, however I was really encouraged that as I was going along I actually found that so much of what I was having to do I actually had the knowledge and skill to do - I truly have learn so much and I can put this into action when required. I do know that if I practiced and used these digital skills on a more regular basic I would be much quicker. As I teach year 1 students and only sporadically need to use many of these tools I am not as polished at using them quickly BUT the exam proved to me that I do know about so much and I now have the confidence to use and develop these skills when situations require. ...To top it all off my son got to see me tackle something that was challenging and that I had to keep a growth mindset about and really just face head on even though the lead in has been hardly ideal. I know this one will be hugely valuable in the exam sitting years that my own children are about to embark on. Life lessons all round and I must say a great deal of digital knowledge intensively imparted on me over this past 9 weeks. Thanks to All the awesome experts and fantastic presenters we had the privilege of learning from and a special mention to my truly fantastic small group leader Venessa who was just brilliant at her role! Thanks DFI

DFI Day 3 Media

 Notes Day three

Anne Sinclaire discussed the importance of the create aspect of the learn create share model and
noted how in the past some teachers had proven success with this method of teaching. It was quite
empowering and seemed like fun for all ages.

Kent
So inspiring to see the capabilities of videos and media and how it can be shared and made available
for others to view.  The different ways you can record are on a camera nd even purchase a device that allows for live streaming straight to a live audience.  One school also has a large screen and drone recording the front runners of the cross country in the usually unseen to the spectator art which is u
Video - video drones phone computer. Teachers can present fotage of students activities for sharing
later.

We created a You tube account and worked though the different ways to save and share media on
this platform.
consumer - using the pre-created stuff already on you tube to save on to your own playlist.
creator - here you can place your own media created by you
studio - studio is the sharing - putting it out there space

I can already see how I may use creating a playlist to share aspects relevent to the curriculum
On you tube that i or my students and their whanau can access.
I will need to so this is something to revise Creating a channel in exam

Google Drawings
I do love presenting and creating fancy posters ect so the learning on google Drawings i can see will
be something very useful and something that I wish to build on and practice. …

I loved working with Amie to create a drawing and make clickable links to find out further information
and that from one picture takes the user to addtional information on the web.
Kids could also customise get kids to use template make a copy and change

Google Slides
Advice for slides are to have the same colours through the doccument, keeping it same similar and
simple - ditch the themes create your own
Tools in google slides

I feel very empowered from todays session.  Wow how much did we pack into one day !!!!  I have so much to learn but have also come so far and already made a shift in my confidence and attitudes
around this learning.
Create a pepeha this is a work in progress for me using a range of skills learnt.
No I have got so many things to go away and practice and also must begin utilizing these in my daily life.  A challenge will be how I can now take from each week and embed it in to either my own planning or life or my class room practice.

Week 7 Review

 Week 7

Using crome book shortcuts……..

Using chrome book shortcuts was really interesting. I use many simple shortcuts on my laptop and with the ipad though I am so very aware that there are just so many more out there.  Oh there are so many more alright it has been really interesting to discover just how many there are. I think that I will endeavour to learn and practice a new short cut that would assist me on a frequent basis. I have since printed out a few and am trying to get into more of a habit of using the shortcut rather than the long many clicks options that I usually revert to.

The 1:1 Device initiative

Partnership- participation and power.  Manaiakalani supports a program to facility The desire to achieve the 1::1 journey with the tricky issue of students from low income family.     There is power in the ownership of a device they have the power to own and be responsible for it and there is a certain value in this.  Together with this there is also a need to protect them and to ensure a positive introduction and education around using this device sensibly and safely..  If they are encouraged to purchase an expensive device then it has to be utilised in meaningful and empowering ways through carefully selected learn create share tasks, encouraging learner agency.  A my school senior students have 1-1 devices and they are consistently using devices in this way.  They are supported by Manaiakalani and use their devices to assist learning in a variety of ways aligning with the learn create share idea.  Our year twos are using ipads and supported also. This looks fabulous. The device issue is something that hinders my ability to drive forward with digital technologies and some of the ideas I have got from this new learning recently.  I have a small selection of old ipads which sometimes are not ideal.  What I have been encouraged by is the lovely story of a teacher that was able to engage her students and work to utilize one old standa lone computer to drive forward in technology.  This soy inspires me that where there is a will there is a way.

Hapara dash is a away of keeping everyone safe or keeping in check with what they are looking at even what they have deleted !!

After hearing about hapara dash and speaking to my own older children who are in intermediate and high school classes with high device usage I can totally see how it is a fantastic and essential tool for teachers to get using.  It allows us to monitor students activity and assist in ensuring that they are responsible with time and choices.

Powerful positive and proactive language

Every time before sharing language / communication online

Is it positive?-  is it thoughtful? -is it helpful?

Partnership with parents important to share info with parents or even better get students to share this information so it is a shared vision and so much more powerful.

Why cybersmart…

We need to keep our students to be safe, SMART and SECUREs online and prepare them in being cuber smart positive online citizens.   Teaching them to interact confidently, POSITIVELY and powerfully online.

This doesn't happen over night Teachers need to model using positive language and show how to interact and communicate in a correct way online. Look for those opportunities to how you can find and use teaching opportunities to model this. It really does need to be seen, heard and modeled many times and must be planned deliberate things modeled and taught to allow this to happen.

New learners need regular teaching on this that builds on what they know and consistently supports being cyber smart.

They are creating their own digital footprint from the time they begin online with us and we need to introduce and  support them to understand of how important this is and the effects  they can have on line and what impacts this has on themselves and others.  Looking at positive but also make wary of the negative effects.   Doing all we can to make this a positive impact out there.  Even young 5 year old students can experience online communications through a class bog or site or face book page where they observe the connection between their school learning and connecting with other classes schools teachers, whanau and others.

Computational thinking

Being digitally literate ….The ability to navigate various digital platforms and to  understand, access and communicate through them.  being comfortable in your own skin when using technology

Well I am certainly progressing on my journey steadily.  Not always entirely comfortable as things do not always sink in for me without much repetition and practice.  I would however say that I am  certainly am progressing  on an up wards trend. (Great acceleration doing DFI) If I look at where I have come from and how I have adapted to change and new learning and my continued motivation to do so I think I can feel proud and encouraged to continue on this exciting journey.

Maria Karasse introduced some of the most advanced technologies.  These are incredible yet they reminded me of a time many years ago when  I attended a huge gathering of teachers, here an expert spoke of the many advancing technologies.  These seemed hugely futuristic but I can now look around and say all are just common place in the current technological world in which we live.  So seems scary to think that driverless cars and other amazing technologies are very much waiting in the wings.  With some of theses new technologies and there capabilities they do bring with them some ethical Issues.  It will be interesting to see how these issues are managed and addressed and peoples responses to these..

Devices are not just a tool they can provide awesome opportunities and experiences and learning

Its not just a tool.Screen save here

Kerry  Boyde- preece discussed the new digital technologies curriculum.  Being digitally competent is when someone who can decide when and why to use the different digital technologies

Empowering students with the confidence to share their learning find resources, have a voice and take charge of their progress and learning, Moving toward digitally fluent teachers and students is going to allow this advancement.

Coding exploration was super fun and I can see how engaging that this could be for my learners.  I loved the graduated introduction to coding through the vehicle of mine craft and I have also dabbled with Light bot which is loaded on some of my class ipads already.  I am eager to do more to introduce this learning to my class both plugged in and unplugged through grids, maths using the language prepositional language that will support this.

The fun continued using scratch junior.  It continues to amaze me the huge amount of different possibilities to create, learn and share using the range of different learning supports out there.  This was a step up from the program scratch junior which I have seen and used a little with a few of my year 1 students.  Again the possibilities and different ways you can use these learning apps is seemingly endless.  I love how there is layers of complexities you can simply explore and create or also create a challenge or task exploring and using the extended range of tools to create then share.

These awesome tools are an invite to any  creative teacher who could utilize the many apps and tools  to inspire learning and development  for the range of learners in their class.

Week 6 review

Week 6

Connecting across the city nation and world.

Limit the links

The power of connection.

-Connecting others support schools and teachers to connect with others, with each others and with each other. Google meets during this time...remember the richness that this type of connection has made during this time which may have been lonely and isolated but we have had this digital connection across so many different peoples and groups.

This past week has been definitely inspirational and encouraging.  I have been trying new things and continuing to dabble in making attempts to move forward with my site and other digital tools and learning.  I have felt frustrated about my site and how it looks and functions. Also the fact that I used it during lockdown to connect with parents and students but now predominantly I use it for me to access and use with the students and have continued using my slides to plan and access in class with students but have no longer been sharing them to the site.

So the skills learnt on sites have allowed me to begin the transformation process of my class site.

I also attended two fabulous work shops during the week that have inspired me.  One was on book creator. It seems soooo exciting and I can see that I would enjoy making class shared books with the students in it, or presenting their work. I would also like to have them use it. I am going to check out the capacity of the old ipads I have in my room and have also asked another staff member who was keen to see if her older students could connect with and teach my students.

Google draw has excited me though I had been frustrated trying to use the tools effectively.  After attending a workshop on this I was re-inspired.  The tutors gave cool options for younger students where
templates could be offered around the drawing space so young students could be taught to  manipulate, duplicate and resize / colour shapes to create using drawings.  I challenged myself and created a drawing on slides demonstrated by my lovely daughter.

I am really thankful to be taking part in this fabulous professional development.  I am not the fastest or the most knowlegable  but I am gaining skills and knowledge every week.  So thankful to my fantastic bubble group tutor Vanessa. She is so very patient, explains everything so well and although there are some times I feel a tad over whelmed I feel so well supported. infact I am possibly my harshest critic. Great to reflect on all the positives and to be in the shoes of a learner who is having to pay close attention.  I believe in this course I have many options to discover all that I do not yet know or have not yet grasped as it is all there in its rewindable form... how comforting is that, so no excuses. Thanks DFI.
