Digital Fluency Intensive Day 1

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

This was a recap of the journey of how Manaiakalani Began. It is an empowering journey and I
enjoyed listening and considering how even with just a little if you have the right vision and passion
you can make a change. I just love thinking of and hearing how this resulted in such positive change
and empowerment for many who had not had that hope previously. About the 'where there is a will,
there is a way' attitude.  The importance of the Learn, create share and the power of this within the
classroom.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability, or workflow as a professional?

So many tips and tricks using the google platforms.  Even just participating in this online learning has
me using many new and developing skills becoming more confident in participating and sharing in an
online/digital way.  Many of the short cuts to do things with just the click of a few keys rather than
moving between screen etc are revolutionary.... but I almost need to find a list of these as I do forget
from one time to the next and end up reverting to the longways.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

As I teach year 1s there are selected things that they can access and so much more that I can use,
then consider ways to adapt to use to advance my teaching and their learning.  I am empowered by the
story of the teacher way back in the day that had her young students learn, record, create and share
with only a few computers in her room finding ways to allow this.  In our class, we have been using
Ipads and I recently introduced taking photos, typing text, and finding images on pic collage.  I have
been quite impressed by how well this teaching and the hands-on task went.  I am looking and
considering what my best next steps could be to continue advancing their skills and this journey.
I think that using voice to text could be a good way to allow some of my advanced readers to
independently record themselves reading and to share it with me or others.  Also, I could use this
together with others in my reading groups to see how the reading sounds and to discuss language,
punctuation and so much more in an exciting way where they get to hear their own voice. I could even
use this to record ideas during a discussion to review or hear again.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability, or workflow in my personal life?

The organization of things in google is something I look forward to improving on this will assist me
as I am one of those who have all sorts and really needs to sort and tame my drive.  Now more than
ever as I am using google so much more and for much of what I do.  The more I practice the more
confidence I gain.  Ever reflecting on my first few sessions of DFI last time I feel that I have gained
many understandings and new skills.  I do see there is much to learn ... in fact, it is continuous.

  1. Hi Rachel, I am impressed that you have rejoined the DFI. You really will be a guru by the end of it!
It is great to see how you are using the things we have covered in your professional life, even when they are not relevant directly to using with your young children. It is empowering for junior teachers to confidently share the knowledge that colleagues who teach older learners have.
